Disney Casts Will Smith As The Genie In The Live-Action Aladdin Remake

Rumors have spread about Disney having some troubles for their Aladdin casting, especially after the cultural appropriation of some characters. But to set the record straight during their biennial D23 Expo, Disney Studios has made an announcement that Will Smith will play the Genie in the upcoming live-action Aladdin remake. The studios have also announced the other casts for the said film.
Smith will take the role from Robin Williams, who gave voice to the character in the original animated film.
The Canadian-based actor Mena Massoud will play the role of the eponymous street urchin while the Power Rangers superstar and British actress Naomi Scott will be taking the role as Princess Jasmine.
Guy Ritchie is directing Aladdin, giving the Disney animated classic a live-action, musical upgrade.
The original film was the highest grossing one in 1992 and received two Academy Awards: best song for their soundtrack A Whole New World and best score.
The live-action film will start filming this August in London but has yet to choose for people to play the squawking Iago, the evil Jafar, the tiger Raja and the monkey Abu. There is yet a release date either.
However, nothing is simple when it comes to Aladdin. Scott’s casting has upset many fans on the grounds of race and ethnicity that have prompted a lengthy debate.
Aladdin is just one of the many live-action remakes of classic animated Disney movies. You should keep an eye for Mulan, Dumbo, The Lion King, and more. There will be more to come in the upcoming months!
