Marley grew up in a catholic family. Once he met Esther Anderson, his ex-girlfriend he became Rastafarian. He strongly believed that Anderson is ‘killing’ their successors using birth control pills. As a result of their disagreements, Marley wrote the song “I shot the sheriff”.
SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT-NIRVANA
Cobain’s friend was joking around and wrote on his wall that Cobain smelled like the female deodorant Teen Spirit. Kurt being Kurt thought that this was a rebellious phrase and he chose it to be the name of his next song. This song actually helped Nirvana sell over 30 million copies of the album “Nevermind”.
SLIDE-GOO GOO DOLLS
This often thought to be ‘love ballad’ it is actually not a love song. As the band’s frontman said, the song covers the often discussed theme of abortion. Slide actually speaks of a teenage girl who grew up in a Catholic environment and gets pregnant. The lyrics represent the debate between the girl and her boyfriend whether to abort the baby or to get married.
JEREMY- EDDIE VEDDER
While Pearl Jam were jamming, Eddie read a story in the newspaper about a 16 year old boy Jeremy who killed himself in front of his classmates. He decided to put the story in verse and came up with the hit ‘Jeremy’.
EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE-THE POLICE
This song is among the top 10 love songs of the teens. However, the song speaks about a possessive stalker. Sting himself called the song ‘ugly’ and ‘very evil’.
