Massive Iceberg, Four Times Larger Than London, Breaks Away From Antarctica

With the latest trend of skepticism about climate change and global warming, Mother Earth has just recently made her point.

An enormous iceberg weighing around a trillion tons and measuring 5,800 square kilometers, broke away from the Antarctic ice shelf, and it is a warning we must all be paying attention to.

Around four times the size of London, the said iceberg was used to be connected to an ice sheet named as Larsen C. Swansea University researchers had been observing the glacial separation for months, and with satellite imaging, they were able to discover that the iceberg broke away from Antarctica between July 10 and July 12.

This is truly the indication of a problem even bigger than the iceberg itself. However, the cause of the separation has not yet proven to be climate change.

Because of the accelerated rise of West Antarctican temperatures, ice shelves are turning to be weaker than ever. Not only does this enormous berg act as a security hazard to marine traffic, the incident can cause glaciers fixed by the Larsen C to flow into the Atlantic Ocean and melt, which can increase the global water mark by ten centimeters.

The destruction of polar regions also endangers their indigenous wildlife, including the popular emperor penguins.

The massive iceberg may stay as it is, with some to have been known to remain in position for as long as 2 decades. but we can’t ignore the possibility that it could actually float away into the ocean.

Researchers are still closely monitoring the progress of the said iceberg.
